Action fans then are well served [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but what ultimately lets the film down is this; it's boring. Banner is pursued halfway across the world by Special Forces troops looking to return him to a military compound, but the chase is woefully mishandled. This should have been a white-knuckle battle of wits and muscle but there is a vast, aching void of tension precisely where the excitement should be.
Elsewhere Tim Roth snarls and shouts as the chief antagonist and Samuel Sterns puts in a scene-stealing late appearance, but this is still very much the Hulk's movie. Credit where credit's due, he looks terrific. The effects crew do a great job in scaling down Ang Lee's bulky monster into a lean, muscle clad giant. Abomination too is well served [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the comic's reptilian appearance swapped for something closer to the Hulk crossed with H. R. Giger - all taught, dirty skin stretched over warped bones. That being said, it is never a good sign when CGI monstrosities elicit more emotion than their human counterparts.
Part sequel, part remake, The Incredible Hulk begins with Bruce Banner hiding out in Central America, doing his best to avoid the authorities while keeping the raging force of his Id at bay. Immediately it becomes clear that this is not a true follow-up to Ang Lee's 2003 movie. Newcomers needn't be put off however as the opening credits sequence tells the viewer everything they need to know. Mercifully, the previous film's infuriating screen-dividers are gone and with them, the tone has changed.

The highlight though is his battle with the Abomination, an over-sized biological weapon that develops out of Tim Roth's maniacal super-soldier. Their fist fight at the film's climax is another high point for the Marvel universe; the duo tearing apart New York in their efforts to destroy one another. Cars are smashed in half and used as boxing gloves, buildings are reduced to rubble and unlucky passers-by are kicked into oblivion.

Not an especially strong outing for an old favourite then but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Robert Downey Junior puts in a brief but tantalising cameo as Tony Stark that points towards a future Avengers movie. Here's hoping that whoever is hired for the script duties does a better job than this though; the monsters are brought to life brilliantly but the love story is unconvincing, the humour falls flat and it winds up as a few exciting action scenes interspersed with utter tedium. Stick with The Dark Knight.
Norton puts in another solid performance but his co-stars don't fare as well. Betty Ross, the Liv Tyler shaped love interest does little more than cry [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], scream or whimper while William Hurt's army man is erroded by the fact he is perhaps the worst General in the history of the American military. And that's up against some stiff competition.
Where Ang Lee dealt in angst-ridden drama and human sentiment, Letterier's vision is more keen to focus on the action scenes. Here, audiences are well served; the Hulk's various rampages are energetic bouts of high mayhem. His campus ruck with the American military is an absolute barnstormer, the big guy shrugging off bullets while kicking humvees across the lawn and swatting helicopters out of the sky.
