Based on the video game of the same name, a rogue prince (Gyllenhaal) reluctantly joins forces with a mysterious princess (Arterton) in a race against dark forces to safeguard an ancient dagger capable of releasing the Sands of Time—a gift from the gods that can reverse time and if in the wrong hands, would allow its possessor to rule the world.
But somewhere, in the depths of Hollywood in the vast lands once known as 'Creativity', an idea came along: "What if we try something else? What if we turn a video game into a movie, but this time, with a so-so story, A-list actors, an experienced director, a studio that everyone trusts and loves, and what if we put an honest EFFORT into making it good?!"
Well, things Just not completely, 180 degrees yet.
Like blood to a vampire, a decent story is needed for a movie to survive and flourish. The sad fact is that, while books and prequel movies generally meet this demand, video games are one of the last places Hollywood should look for a film basis. Why? Well [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to be honest, video games have awful stories! Almost all of them are just excuses to blow things up, kill people or both. True, there's a few video game franchises that have great stories (Legend of Zelda, Metal Gear Solid, Sly Cooper, etc), but not only are those as rare as a Wild Ditto, but they're so good and rich in story and love from the gaming community, that movie studios are actually afraid of adapting them to the silver screen, for fear of the financial and social backlash that will occur if it's not done well.
Does Prince of Persia Rise Above Other Failed Video Game Adaptations?
The wishing fairies (read: Disney) heard this plea; And thus, The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was born! With a story involving time travel, cool parkour, fancy sword fights, Jake Gyllenhaal as Prince Dastan, Gemma Arterton as the princess, and former Harry Potter director Mike Newell, maybe things would turn around for video game movies!
Everything about the movie, top to bottom, is just okay. Gyllenhall is good, but not great. It's hard to act at all, when your character is written without a personality. So he does well, all things considering. His performance is very reminescient of Brendan Fraser's Rick O' Connell, from The Mummy, if Fraser didn't have any direction. Or talent. And Arterton is too busy sounding like the wind itself might shatter her words. The story is better than other video game films, but it's still cliche in its twists and turns. The two leads argue the first half of the movie, so obviously [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they're going to hook up later, for some reason. Dastan was framed for murder, so obviously whoever he trusts most is the culprit. This all sounds like spoilers, but about 20 minutes into the movie, you already know every turn the movie is going to make. It's as if you've already seen the movie [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you just used the fabled Sands of Time, went back in time and are watching it again.
There are also too many dumb moments that teen boys probably get a kick out of now, but in ten years time, they'll be grown up, rent this movie for nostalgia, and think to themselves "Wow, I actually LIKED this as a kid?". The opening battle scene involves sneaking Gyllenhaal over an unguarded wall. So his merry band of loyal men literally shoot arrows into said wall, Gyllenhaal grabs each arrow and uses them to scale the ladder was just too easy, huh? He had to go through all the theaterics, waste the arrows and risk the noise, when a ladder is faster, eas
