Besides running the festival, artistic director Gaze makes guest appearances at private, scholastic, and corporate events to share his enthusiasm for Shakespeare; as well, Bard on the Beach hosts Young Shakespeareans Summer Workshops for youth and teenagers on site, and Bard in the Classroom hosts workshops for students and teachers during the school year.
Bard on the Beach One of Canada's Biggest Not-for-Profit Shakespeare Festivals
Bard on the Beach has grown over the last twenty-one years: its audiences have grown to 90, 000 in 2009, as compared to 6, 000 in 1990, and productions have increased from one to four per year [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making it one of Canada’s largest non-for-profit Shakespeare festivals. Bard presented a production in the Okanagan in August 2003, which it did through a collaboration with Mission Hill Family Estate winery, which was called ‘Bard on the Vineyard.’

The festival began it twenty-first season this year on June 3, 2010, and will end on September 25. This season will see the company stage productions of Much Ado About Nothing, Antony and Cleopatra, Falstaff, and Henry V. As well as these four Shakespearean dramas, there will be a performance of Puccini’s opera La Boheme, courtesy of the University of British Columbia Opera Ensemble and member of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra, in the Mainstage tent, from August 30 to September 6, 2010. This year’s performance of La Boheme is part of Bard on the Beach’s history of offering ancillary activities such as opera performances and specialty workshops and forums alongside Shakespearean performances.
Bard on the Beach was founded by artistic director Christopher Gaze, with a mandate to provide Vancouver residents and tourists with affordable, accessible, high-quality performances of Shakespeare’s dramas. It is a professional, not-for-profit theatre company, which began as an Equity Co-op funded primarily by a Canada Council Explorations grant awarded to Gaze, and engages thirty actors per season as well as an excellent team of directors [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], designers, and technicians and supported by over 200 volunteers. Audiences can find concessions, merchandise, and bar in the tented ‘Bard Village.’
Since 1990, Bard on the Beach has entertained audiences with its unique interpretations of William Shakespeare’s comedies, tragedies, and historical dramas in open-ended tents on the Vanier Park waterfront in Vancouver, BC. The Mainstage seats 520 patrons and stages two productions every afternoon from late May to September; the Douglas Campbell Studio Stage, which seats 240 patrons, was added to the festival in 1999 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and stages Shakespeare’s lesser-known dramas and unique productions of his greater works.
