Backpacking ultralight is often about space savings as well as saving weight in a backpack. Many titanium cookware items nest, or fit inside each other, to reduce their packed size. Backpacking titanium cookware also features folding handles or removable pot grabbers to streamline packing. Some pots accommodate a fuel canister during travel, saving even more space.

Titanium was discovered in 1791 by Englishman William Gregor, who called it manaccanite. M. H. Klaproth, a German chemist, rediscovered the metal soon afterward and, believing his discovery to be the first, named it after the mythological Titans of ancient Greece. Gregor was eventually credited as the first to uncover the element, but the name titanium stuck.
Titanium is an excellent choice for cookware because it is noncorrosive and nonreactive. These qualities also make it attractive for backpack gear, but even more appealing is its weight and durability. Titanium is 50 percent lighter than steel and lighter and stronger than aluminum. It has the strongest strength-to-weight ratio of any structural metal. Titanium cookware is scratch resistant and thin-walled and will boil water quickly over a camp stove – a big advantage for getting meals or hot beverages ready quickly and reducing the amount of canister fuel carried on a trip.
Choosing Titanium Cookware for Ultralight Backpacking
Lightweight and ultralight backpackers often want to reduce the weight of their backpack gear to make trail and backcountry travel easier. But backpacking ultralight isn’t always as simple as packing less or leaving items behind. Backpacking cookwear is essential, so consider titanium cookware as an ultralight alternative to stainless steel or aluminum cook sets.
Drawbacks of Titanium Cookware
Most lightweight backpackers overlook the minor drawbacks of titanium cookware. It is generally more expensive than stainless steel or aluminum cookware because it is difficult to extract from the earth and complicated to process. While its thin walls make for fast cooking, they als
Titanium is the ninth most abundant element in the earth’s crust and is found embedded in ores such as rutile and ilmenite. To be useful as a metal, titanium must be separated from the ore, processed into a porous “sponge,” and melted into ingots, or bars, from which titanium products can be fabricated. Metallurgist William Kroll optimized this process in 1946 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], after which titanium became popular in the aerospace industry. Today titanium is also used in medical devices, sports equipment, jewelry [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and electronics.
Buyers should also think about the kinds of foods they most frequently prepare on trips. Meals mixed in one bowl and cooked in another require different cookware than one-pot dehydrated meals. Some backpackers may want a kettle or small frying pan. Look for pots with lids that double as bowls, plates, or saucepans, allowing both versatility in cooking and the possibility of accommodating more than one backpacker. Titanium plates, bowls, and cups may enable a group to carry less cookware altogether.
From Element to Titanium Cookware
Although titanium cookware is light, backpackers will want to carry as few pieces as possible. Backpack gear companies such as Snow Peak, MSR, Evernew, and Primus sell individual and combinations of pots, skillets, cups, plates, and bowls [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so cook sets can be customized. Buyers should think in terms of how big their backpacking parties will be. Cookware should allow for food preparation in adequate portions and serving of food so that everyone can eat at once.
