Cycling La Vuelta a Espana Stage 3 Claims Some Big Names
In 2009 he won Paris-Tours again and in the same month the Giro di Lombardia, a one day classic held each October around Lake Como in northern Italy. This year he has had a wonderful season. He took the classic Amstel Gold Race before going to Spain for la Vuelta a Espana where he won two stages and wore the red leader's jersey for five days. He finished 50th overall, 1hr 38 behind but what matters for Geelong is his recent stage wins on a very tough Spanish course.
Gilbert has been training in Geelong in preparation for the road race on 3 October and believes the course will suit him. He told Het Laatste Nieuws [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],
"The first 83km may or may not play a significant role in the actual race – if it is windy, drizzly conditions then it could be similar to the first 100 km of a Dutch or Belgian Classic.
Profile Belgian Pro Cyclist Philippe Gilbert
Philippe Gilbert raced la Vuelta a Espana this year distinguishing himself as a tough competitor in the mountains of Spain. Born in July 1982 in Verviers Gilbert turned professional in 2003. He currently rides with Belgian team Omega Pharma-Lotto. The current world champion [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Australian Cadel Evans has tipped Gilbert to take the Worlds road race title in Geelong on 3 October.
"The simulation ride on the indoor trainer that national coach Carlo Bomans showed me was bang on: It's not easy, there are two steep climbs, with the first one a lot like the slope that we had last year in the Belgian Champion
"The total ascending of the course is 3,076 m – in comparison with other courses, if we look at Mendrisio last year [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it had a total climbing meterage of 4,655 m. There's about 1,400 m difference if you're looking at rating the course. This course is probably a little more difficult than Madrid, so it's around a Stuttgart or Salzburg-type of course.
Gilbert won Stages 3 and 19 of la Vuelta, the last in very cool conditions, about 15 degrees Celsius. On Stage 3 he out sprinted new world number one Spanish rider Joaquin Rodriguez, taking the stage by 14 seconds. His win on Stage 19 is also significant for Geelong because he beat two sprinters, American Tyler Farrar (Garmin) and Italian Filippo Pozzato (Team Katusha) who are in Geelong for the Championships. Rodriguez isn't coming to Australia.
When announcing the Australian men's elite team, Australia's high performance manager Shayne Bannan compared the Geelong course to an Ardennes Classic and said the team had been chosen accordingly. Gilbert is known as a classics specialist and says the Geelong course will suit him. Is 2010 Philippe Gilbert's year for the rainbow jersey?
"The difference – and this is where it could play a significant role in how the course is raced – is that the climbing is in the last 180 km as opposed to 3,076 m being spread over the 260 km distance. Therefore, the type of rider we were looking for is someone who would be quite successful in the Ardennes Classics."
Gilbert turned professional in 2003 by joining FDJeux.com. More recently Gilbert raced the Tour Down Under in 2008 taking the King of the Mountains jersey as well as the GC. In the same year he won two stages of the Vuelta a Mallorca and the Het Volk for the second time. As a finish to a great season he won the classic Paris-Tours by four seconds.
