The Solomon Islanders had been swimming freestyle possibly for thousands of years before it went through the changes to become the modern freestyle.
In the late 1800s, Solomon Islands born Alick Wickham enjoyed swimming with his friends in the local lagoon. Alick left the Solomon Islands to work as a houseboy for a Sydney specialist. He spent most of his spare time swimming as he had done in the lagoons of the Solomons. One day he was swimming in the Bronte Street baths in Sydney when a curious onlooker cried out: 'Look at that kid crawling on the water.'
But where did this technique come from? Who developed the stroke to move the human body so efficiently through the water?
Another ancient ritual from the Pacific is the Vanuatu version of bungee jumping: the Pentecost Jump.
Dick Cavill used the new stroke to win a race, and the Australian Crawl was born. The name was later changed to 'freestyle'. Those early pioneers of modern freestyle swam through a shark infested lagoons, a far cry from the modern, high-tech pools of the Olympics and World Championships.
The freestyle swimming style has been hailed as an Australian invention. The original name [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'Australian Crawl' accredits the origins to this country. Australia did play a major role in bringing the style to the attention of the world, but the basics came from the tiny island nation of the Solomon Islands.
Another person fascinated with Alick's strange style was Dick Cavill. He saw the possibilities of the stroke as it provided the opportunity to streamline the body in the water. With his brother, Arthur, and swimming coach father, Frederick [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they refined the style into the basics of modern freestyle. Wickham and his Solomon Island friends breathed by lifting the head in front. Dick Cavill breathed on the side to cut down drag and synchronised the kick with the overhand movement of the arms.
Other South Pacific Sports
Many people plough up and down the local pool chasing the black line in the pursuit of fitness. Or take the sport to the next level and swim for gold at the Olympic Games or World Championships.
The Solomon Islands are a collection of islands stretching in an arc from the eastern corner of New Guinea to Vanuatu. The mainly Melanesian population has an affinity with the surrounding ocean. They gather food from the coral reefs and use the marine creatures as subjects for their wood carvings. To live with the sea the Solomon Islanders had to adapt. In their games and foraging in the crystal clear, aquamarine reefs they developed an overhand stroke to propel them through the water.

But the Pacific islands have been the location for the development of other sports. Surfing [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], once performed for powerful Hawaiian kings, is now done at nearly every country that has beaches and waves. Sports From The South Pacific
Surprisingly, the technique has its origins in that vast area of the planet called the Pacific Ocean. The Pacific nations might not be the centre of the world economy or produce resources used by all nations, but the culture and traditions of the region have developed into sports that are well entrenched in western society.
