Yap Films and The Dive Detectives
Yap Films is an independent production company based in Toronto, Canada that has produced a series for History Television Canada and National Geographic International called The Dive Detectives. The series is based on work conducted by the father and son professional diving team of Mike and Warren Fletcher.
Working with the Institute for Ocean Technology in St. John's, researchers simulated conditions present on Lake Superior at the time of the disaster that demonstrated that a freak wave might have been a factor in the disaster. A rogue wave could have easily broken the back of the aging freighter as it rode low in the water with its heavy lading.
"When supper time came the old cook came on deck [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Saying 'Fellows [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's too rough to feed ya,'
Gordon Lightfoot released the song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" in the 1976 album Summertime Dream. Later in the same year, Lightfoot distributed it as a single and the song reached the number two spot on Billboard’s pop chart by November. The iconic ballad tells the tale of a Great Lakes ore carrier that went down with all hands on Lake Superior in the winter of 1975.
Zap Film producers previewed their effort with Gordon Lightfoot in an effort to secure permission to use his song in the film. Lightfoot was moved by the evidence presented and vowed to change the lyrics of his now famous song.
In a press release announcing release of the film series, Gordon Lightfoot says, “I’m sincerely grateful to yap films and their program The Dive Detectives for not only making a terrific film about the loss of the Edmund Fitzgerald but particularly for putting together compelling evidence that the tragedy was not a result of crew error. This finally vindicates, and honours, not only all of the crew who lost their lives, but also the family members who survived them. As a result [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I was pleased to grant them permission to use my song 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' in the program, one of the rare instances in which I’ve allowed this, despite numerous requests over the years.”
At 7 p.m. it grew dark, it was then, He said, 'Fellas, it's been good to know ya.'"

Gordon Lightfoot Modifies Lyrics of the “Wreck”
Collaborating with maritime researchers, the Fletchers explore a theory that the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald sinking wasn't due to problems with its hatches, but rather was the victim of a rogue wave. Rogue waves are a phenomenon observed on the open ocean and images of these huge waves have been recorded by orbiting satellites. Witnesses on nearby ships present during the sinking reported conditions that might have favored formation of an out sized wave.
Questions have lingered over the years as to the cause of the sinking. A Coast Guard investigation of the incident fixed blame on construction of the vessel’s cargo deck hatches and by extension the crew for somehow failing to secure them properly. Lightfoot’s song has a line about this conclusion that says, “…at 7 p.m. the main hatchway gave in.” Blame being placed on the crew has remained controversial since it was first suggested.
Lightfoot has stated that he intends to perform "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" with a new line to vindicate the crew:
