Chattahoochee River Valley and Long Island Shoals
Finding the Trailhead
The loop begins at the Indian Trail Road parking area as an old gravel road [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], gradually descending towards the Chattahoochee River Valley. Closer to the river, the trail begins a more moderate descent. Near the bottom, a bridge crosses a small creek at the lower trailhead parking lot. The trail then turns and runs along the bank of the Chattahoochee River. Hikers can see the Long Island Shoals at this point. Shoals are sandbars or sandbanks containing small pebbles, sand, or silt that build up to make the water shallow.
Thornton Shoals and the Palisades
Down in the river valley, the trail crosses Cabin Creek and becomes a gravel road that continues to descend. Just before the trail turns right, there is a short “rock wall enclosing a small, square area that once supported a fairly substantial building or bridge,” according to Randy and Pam Golden in the 2008 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Atlanta, including Marietta, Lawrenceville, and Peachtree City.
Cross another footbridge and the trail approaches the palisades, or cliff, area as well as the Thornton Shoals. The trail climbs over a large shallow cave rising up from the bluff along the river and clambers over several rock outcrops. There are several interconnecting short trails that cross the main trail and little rock caverns along the cliff area. Further up, the trail descends on wooden steps to an outlook providing a panoramic view of the Chattahoochee River. Go back up the steps and take a left at the map stand to wind down to the river through a large hardwood forest.
According to the Goldens, to get to the Indian Trail Road trailhead [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], take I-285 to the Riverside Drive exit. Go south on Riverside Drive until it ends and then take a left onto Mount Vernon Highway. Mount Vernon ends at Northside Drive. Turn left onto Northside Drive and then take a right onto Indian Trail. The road ends at the parking area. To reach the second trailhead down near Long Island Shoals, do not turn onto Indian Trail, but continue on Northside Drive, turning right onto Harris Trail. Then turn right onto Whitewater Creek Road. The parking lot entrance is on the right.
Golden, Randy and Pam. 60 Hikes Within 60 Miles: Atlanta, including Marietta [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Lawrenceville, and Peachtree City. Birmingham, AL: 2008.
The nearly five miles of trail courses through about 390 acres just inside busy Interstate 285 on the northwest side of Atlanta. This trail is part of the Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, an area with multiple pieces of land designated for recreation along 48 miles of the river. Once on the Palisades East Trail, it is hard to believe that not even three miles away is the bustling metropolis. The trail consists primarily of one large loop and an out and back section that runs along the river.
The trail then runs along the river bank, over Mountain Heath Creek, and through an area of massive rock outcrops. Devils Race Course Shoals can also be seen in this area. The trail goes through a bamboo forest and ends just past it. Backtrack through the bamboo, the rocks, across the creeks, and up through the hardwood forest to the map stand near the palisades outlook. Take a right and follow the trail until it intersects Indian Trail Road about 200 yards from the parking area.
