eflies have a shining [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blinking light on their backs. It is a very delightful sight when several fireflies are flying around in the dark [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with their lights going off and on.
Fireflies are actually beetles [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], nocturnal members of the family Lampyridae. Fireflies are distinguished among other luminescent insects of the equal family because of their wings. Read More
Fireflies are also known as lightning bugs. They use their light or bioluminescence to pull towards you prey or mates. The fireflies light are cold with no infrared or ultraviolet frequencies. This light is chemically produced in the insects lower abdomen. It may well be yellow, red, green or pale red in color.
There are about 2000 varieties of fireflies found in tropical environment. Many of them live in wet and wooded areas. The reason for these insects to live in these places is, that in these wet and wooded areas there are plenty of food sources for their larvae. These larvae are called glow worms and they too emit light. Read More
Fireflies are brown in color and they have a supple body. The female lays her eggs on the ground. The eggs take 3 4 weeks to emerge.
Adult fireflies mainly feed on plant pollen or nectar. But some of them are predatory. The larvae of most species are specialized predators and nourish on other larvae, terrestrial snails and slugs. Some of them have grooved mandibles which deliver digestive fluids directly to the prey.
All fireflies glow as larvae. In lampyrid larvae the light seems to be to be a warning signal to predators. Most firefly larvae have distaste or toxic chemicals.
There is organism that uses bioluminescence for sexual selection. The firefly is a model example for this. Most fireflies are distasteful and may well be poisonous to vertebrates. The unique courtship flash patterns emitted by flying males in search of females of the genera photinus, photuris and pyractomena support to distinguish them. The female bug of the photinus genus do not fly, but they do give a signal by a flash light answer to males of their own species for the sole purpose of predation. The female photuris fireflies mimic the mating flashes of other lightning bugs.
The photuris species are referred to as femme fatale fireflies. This is for the reason that when the females mimic and the males of other type are attracted to what appears to be a fitting mate, the males are been eaten. Read More
There are many fireflies which do not make light. Usually these species are day flying. These fireflies employ pheromones to signal mates.
Fireflies are fascinating creatures. In the dark the view of fireflies is similar to the twinkling stars in the heavens.
