The Best American series of books offers infinite riches to a diverse body of readers. There are Best American Fiction, Humor, and Spiritual Writing anthologies; Travel and Sports writing are covered, as are erotica and the comics field. One of the most informative and enjoyable of these annual all-star collections, though, is the Best American Science And Nature Writing, a compilation of articles that profile landmarks in the ongoing quest to expand human understanding of the universe... not to mention the tireless researchers whose discoveries, large and small, affect our everyday lives.
Editors Tim Folger and Richard Preston read hundreds of articles last year to put together the 2007 edition of the book [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], surveying magazines as varied as Smithsonian, Time and Vanity Fair. The result takes readers from the archaeological excavation of an ancient Roman sewer to the furthest reaches of space, where dwarf galaxies offer tantalizing clues about the creation of the Milky Way. Other articles have a more easily seen connection to life in the twenty-first century: in "Health Secrets from the Morgue," Michael Perry explains how the decrease in funding for routine medical autopsies may deprive doctors and patients of critical information about treating illnesses; William Langewiesche, meanwhile, analyzes the specter of atomic-age terrorism in "How to get a Nuclear Bomb."
Keeping up with the scientific ideas that shape today's world is a worthwhile aspiration, but it is also a daunting one. Science news is often covered glancingly, if at all, in mainstream media [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and just gathering up--let alone reading--the various magazines that offer insightful and illuminating science articles would be prohibitively time-consuming. The editors of this outstanding anthology have done all that work for the benefit of everyone, sifting through countless essays and offering up a glittering collection of ideas, biographies, speculations... and sober warnings about the future. The Best American Science and Nature Writing 2007 is nothing less than a window into the world of the American laboratory, one that explains the complexities of the world in prose that is both easy to grasp and delightful to read.
These serious articles are balanced by more lighthearted fare: Jonathan Rauch's "Sex, Lies, and Video Games," for example, or Robert Sapolsky's whimsical speculations about how an ordinary wedding might play out if the human participant had a sense of smell as keen as that of a dog. In a thoroughly fascinating piece entitled "Cooking for Eggheads", Patricia Gadsby introduces readers to the field of molecular gastronomy [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which examines the science behind cooking. Is there an ideal temperature for preparing the perfect hard-cooked egg. . . and, if so, does one actually use boiling water to make it? Can molecular biochemists inform the artistry of the world's best chefs? Given the popularity of cooking-themed television shows in recent years, such seemingly innocuous questions can stir up plenty of controversy.
