Many of us own paintings, prints or other pieces of artwork that are just plain dirty. After many years of hanging on a wall, sitting on a closet shelf, or living in a drawer, paintings pick up dust, dirt, allergens, smoke [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pet hair and sometimes bacterial or fungal growth. Here’s how to decide whether to clean it at home or send it out to a professional.
As Janet Green says in her Antique Monthly article entitled “Cleaning Paintings Requires Know-How”, each painting or print is a “problem unto itself and different solvents and techniques are required in each instance after careful testing of the materials used in the painting”. Dozens of ready-made cleaning products and Do-It-Yourself kits are also available, and undoubtedly some of them work on some cleaning projects.
First, take the painting or print out of its frame, if any, and examine it in a good strong natural light. Answer the following questions:
Do you have a sufficient workable knowledge of the chemicals used as elements of your piece, such as varnish, lacquer, oil paints, inks, acrylics, etc.?Do you have sufficient hand skills, such as delicately testing various cleaning solutions or applying the proper pressure on a cotton swab, that would be required to perform the cleaning?Do you have a working knowledge of any particular characteristics your piece may have [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] such as 19th century acidic papers or 20th century synthetic varnish or resin?Do you have access to, or experience with, all the tools and equipment you will need for your piece, such as Japanese paper, dry cleaning sponges, mold treatment chemicals or a drying rack?Do you have a safe environment for the aftercare many pieces will need, such as a pet and/or dander-free environment and adequate space for the piece to dry and/or cure undisturbed?Do–It-Yourself Kits and Other Self-Help Aids
Determine the Extent of the Cleaning Project
Are there any scratches, torn places, gouged areas or broken corners?Does the piece need restoration or simply a good cleaning? Is the painting or print done in oil, watercolor [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], acrylic, ink, mixed media or some other technique? Is the print a lithograph or giclee, an original or a reproduction? Is it a suitable size for the work area available?Does the painting or print have any significant monetary value?Does it have sentimental value outside the family?Does it have any provenance that increases its value? Is it signed and/or dated by the artist?Determine Whether You Have Appropriate Knowledge and Skills
However, the final decision whether to attempt your own cleaning or hire a professional should be based on many factors. If your piece has little or no monetary value and you just want to experiment with your technique, your decision will be very different from the person who has an expensive and valuable family heirloom and doesn’t want to take the risk of ruining it. Most likely, your situation will fall somewhere between those two extremes and your decision must be made by balancing your skills and knowledge against the value of the piece and the extent of the project. Good luck.
