We spend our quite engaged lives doing stuff,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], achieving but still no really knowing who we are.
"Oh, you know Todd; he's the surfie guy with the Brad Pitt body and the killer blue eyes."
When our aggregate identity (who we are) is something outer (to our idea, our spirit, our ecology - the elite of who we really are), then we set ourselves up for ache, disappointment and nervousness.
Fall butme people, their identity is their body (a body builder perhaps, a model perhaps), or part thereof (the flat-chested girl who 'buys' herself some gigantic chests).
I see this (my-body-is-who-I-am syndrome) a lot in my go, and as ironic as it may appear, I actually spend most of my period helping people amplify anything but their body.
"Sure you know Sarah; fifty-ish, heaps of money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], owns that kid's clothes label, pedals a blonde cilia"
How do others see you?
Earlier this week I went to a funeral to celebrate the life of an extraordinary female.
And meantime she had done much in her life (practical matter, profession stuff, sporting stuff), her babies (all 7 of them) got up and spoke about who their mommy actually was.
As I sat in that service with tears coiling down my cheeks (there goes my wanna-be-alpha-male identity), I thought to myself... I hope there are a few people present mentioning similar asset while I'm do
"Simon?... oh yeh, he's that haughty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how-good-am-I bodybuilder with the giant weapon, puny brain, bad rind, horrible respiration and not self-esteem."
Are you the sum of your achievements and possessions... or are you something much greater?
What are you known for?
What ambition you be remembered for?
Have you thought about it?
Do you care?
It seems to me that many of us don't really know who we are.
We have our very own personal identity emergency.
Whatever their identity the thing which gives them (a level of) positiveness and ego esteem (in front of others anyway)... makes them feel extra safe, safer, happier, better about themselves (for a while).
Who are you really?
What's you're identity?
Fhardly everme people their identity is their career... "did I say that I'm a CEO immediately?"
Their car... "wanna work for a whirl in />
Their I probably don't absence the thirteen bedrooms />
Their money... "got most of my money knotted up in attribute, shares and a few others strategic />
Their academic achievements... "yeh, just finished my Phd".. (excellent achievement but it's not who you are... it's a thing you did!).
Their fearsome reputation... "I've got seventeen dark belts, I settee press a thousand pounds and I dine live chickens for breakfast"(and I'm an insecure simpleton who desperately needs your acceptance).
As long for our identity is rooted in something which tin be taken from us (looks, jobs, money, playthings), we'll all be insecure.
"Yeh, dad's kinda... well.. I surmise he does adore muse... he's pretty moody though... but it's probably because he's exhausted, being the workaholic that he is... and anyway... as he always says; he's doing it all for us funny, doesn't feel favor it periodically"
If we take away all your stuff... then... who are you?
Yeh, we know what you do for a job, we know what you look like, we know what you drive, where you live and what you've done... but who are you beyond all that?
And this wasn't just some feel-good, emotional fluff... no, they drew an precise picture of who this woman was.
She wasn't a job, or a personalty, alternatively a body, or one accomplishment... though she had 'achieved' much.
No, she was a selfless, loving, caring, generous, passionate, strong individual who inspired and affected many... and left the earth (or her chapter of it) a better location.
When people (who maybe don't know you intimately) refer to you, what's your tag?
Her identity.
And waddabout your household and friends; what kind of personality do you have with them?
