Still no one can sing a heart-stopper like Celine Dion. On Linda Perry (Alicia Keys, Christina Aguilera) track “My Love” shows a vulnerable Dion, one who sings from the heart. The story of a relationship gone sour [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she belts out her love-gone-bad story over an understated piano and 70’s sounding organ.
If “My Love” can be described as subtle, a word rarely associated with Celine Dion [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that’s where it ends. Dion takes every chance she can get to tell listeners she is branching out on this album like she hasn’t before such as on rocker “Surprise Surprise” when she sings "Just when you thought you got me figured out" then goes on to explain how she does unexpected things.
No one will ever accuse Celine Dion of being an experimental artist, but on new album, Taking Chances, her first in 5 years [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she does spread her wings slightly.
On third track “Eyes on Me” a sitar-tinged ballad, she attempts to diversify her sound even further. And while this Indian sounding track marks a slight departure for Dion, one thing remains constant: every song on this 16 track recording revolves around love, either falling into it, falling out of it, longing it or moving away from it.
Keeping with the 1980’s rocker vibe, Dion follows "Taking Chances" with a note by note cover of Heart’s 1987 smash “Alone”, a strange choice of cover, but evidently that’s the point.
While not much of a surprise, Dion tries as hard as she can to fit every demographic possible with this album. She heads to the dance floor on guitar-driven dance pop tracks such as the brilliant “Shadow of Love” and “Fade Away” and on Aldo Nova-written "Can't Fight the Feelin'" she rips a track from a 1970 AM radio station playlist to fill the void left after REO Speedwagon exited the music scene. Celine Dion even reaches out to church goers on this album with the gospel-tinged “New Dawn”, another Linda Perry track that uses a series of clichéd expressions to show how many chances she is taking on this disc.
Faithful to the power ballad that made her a household name, Dion enlisted a team of modern rock producers and writers, including Evanescence’s Ben Moody who wrote and produced the edgy (for Dion) “This Time”, to help her reclaim the Diva crown she surrendered to Britney Spears and Rihanna while headlining a sold out Las Vegas show.
Shadow of Love
Subtle and heart-wrenching, she doesn’t attempt to blow listeners away with her pipes, even on the climax. We all know what Dion is capable of vocally but at least on “My Love” she remains the meek girl trying to get her man back. “My Love” is by far the best track Dion has recorded in a decade and deserves to top the charts as many of her ballads did back in her 90’s heyday.
