Once a beginning skier can get up from a fall and control speed and direction with the snowplow technique [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] it's time to get on the ski lift and head for slopes marked with a green circle (the easiest level).
Getting on a ski lift is a case where the task is actually easier than it looks. To get on [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all the skier has to do is shuffle into position as soon as the people in front have taken their turn and been whisked away by their chair. Usually there's a mark in the snow where the skiers are supposed to stand and wait for the chair to come around, or a sign that says "load here." If a new skier is nervous or taking too long, the lift attendant can slow down the lift. (Skiers can even ask for help). The skiers stand in a line [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], waiting for the chair. Remove pole straps from wrists and hold both poles in one hand, so the other hand is free to grab the chair. Look for the chair; it will slowly come up from behind. When it touches the back of the skier's legs, simply sit down and scoot to the back of the chair.
Don't worry about falling; lift attendants are used top dealing with first-timers, and will shut the lift off immediately. Once everyone is seated, a safety bar can be pulled down to prevent falls from the lift and to help with fear of heights.

Getting Off a Ski Lift
Dismounting from the lift is a bit trickier (and a lot scarier). Usually, as the lift approaches the dismount point, a sign will tell skiers to raise the safety bar and hold their ski tips up (so the tips don't bang into or get caught on the embankment when approaching the dismount area). Be sure, as well, that no loose clothing is snagged in any part of the lift. When it's time to get off, the chair will be low enough that the skis can touch the ground (and a sign will tell skiers to "dismount here"). As the ground starts sloping down, the skier simply stands up, pushes away from the chair, and glides straight downhill.
One of the best strategies for those who know they'll be trying to ski in the upcoming season is to try to find a ski lift in the summer or autumn. Many ski areas run summer and autumn lifts for mountain bikers, walkers, and leaf-peepers out to see the foliage. This is a great way to see exactly how the lift works. Of course, it's not exactly the same as tackling it while sliding on two pieces of five-foot long-metal, but it will familiarize beginning skiers with the basic process.
Getting On a Ski Lift
There's no need to push off or try to run away from the chair – the chair is designed not to bang the skiers; it will just will turn away and head downhill. All the skier has to worry about is staying upright. Keep the knees loosely bent, and make a nice controlled snowplow while continuing to ski away from the dismount area to clear it for those coming up behind. As with getting on the lift, the attendants will be watching, and can help if necessary (including stopping the lift).
Of course, all this is much easier to write about than it is to accomplish the first time. But with a few lessons, a little patience, and a sense of humor, skiers can quickly master the ski lift, and pay attention to the wonderful scenery rather than fretting about the process of getting on and off
Types of ski lifts differ enormously, from the bunny slope "Magic Carpets" (slow moving people movers, not unlike the walking sidewalks in airports) to alpine gondolas that hold 100 people or more. But the basic ski lift is a bench that takes two to four people up a mountain. Getting on and off is cause for concern for most beginners.
