Body & Health Canada, "Appendicitis" (accessed Saturday, June 26, 2010).
With initial symptoms that mimic pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and vomiting , diagnosing appendicitis is often made even more difficult by the many physiological and anatomic changes that occur in the mother’s body.
In the best interests of the mother and fetus, appendicitis in pregnancy should be treated promptly. Normally, if appendicitis is suspected, a gynaecologist or surgeon will order an immediate appendectomy, minimizing the likelihood that the appendix will burst.
While many pregnancies sail by fairly uneventfully aside from the odd swollen foot or unpleasant bout of morning sickness, some are plagued by unfortunate health issues. Some ailments, such as gestational diabetes, are easily treatable with medication and carry with them minimal risk to the mother and/or fetus. Others, however, such as acute appendicitis, arise suddenly and require immediate medical attention.
Causes of Acute Appendicitis
Advanced symptoms of appendicitis may include:
An obstruction may be caused by feces, parasites or growths [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], enlarged lymph tissues, inflammatory bowel diseases including Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis or trauma to the abdomen.

Common Causes of Pelvic Pain
Appendicitis is caused by an obstruction on the inside of the appendix (the appendiceal lumen). The resulting mucus backup and bacteria growth causes the appendix to become swollen and infected.
Early symptoms of appendicitis may take four-48 hours to develop and include:
Normally, the abdominal pain that accompanies appendicitis presents itself in the lower right abdomen. In pregnancy, however [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as the uterus gets bigger it pushes the appendix up towards the right kidney, causing pain in the back which may be initially mistaken for a kidney infection, Braxton Hicks contractions, or false labour. This may result in delayed diagnosis, premature labour, and increased rates of morbidity for mothers and foetuses.

An appendectomy can be done in two ways – a laprotomy or a laparoscopic. A laprotomy removes the appendix through a single incision in the lower right abdomen whereas laparoscopic uses several small incision and special surgical tools fed through the incision to remove the appendix. This procedure leads to fewer complications and has a shorter recovery time.

Symptoms of Acute Appendicitis
Four percent of women with ruptured appendicitis in pregnancy may die and one in three babies may be lost.

An inflamed appendix will likely burst if not removed. This can lead to a dangerous condition called peritonitis where the perforation in the appendix causes pus to leak out of the colon and form large abscesses in the abdominal cavity. Without prompt treatment, this condition can be fatal.
