George Strait is an icon of Texas country music, with hits like “Amarillo By Morning,” and “Does Ft. Worth Ever Cross Your Mind [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” typifying his Texas troubadour image, (George Strait Biography, accessed September 3, 2010). George scored his first hit at the age of 29, with “Unwound [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],” and went on from there to win award after award. He is widely regarded as a legend in the world of country music, and a role model for many aspiring country musicians.
Granger Smith is good because he captures the feel of small town Texas very skillfully, particularly in songs like “We Bleed Maroon.” Other songs like “Colorblind,” “Something About Her Blue Eyes,” and “Where Is She Now?” convey a compelling, simple country music feeling of heartache that Granger delivers exceptionally well.
She has managed to be a rebel without becoming a parody of herself, and maintained the authenticity of her original sound through many evolutions to the varied, rich vocal and instrumental sound of Revolution. What she does next will be fascinating.

Granger Smith
He is a former member of the Corps of Cadets at Texas A&M, and has a Bachelor’s degree from that same university as well. Granger is not as well known as many Texas country music icons, but his music is great. His 2006 album Livin’ Like a Lonestar featured the catchy song “Livin’ Like a Lonestar,” which describes making a living as a traveling musician in Texas. Granger’s 2007 song “We Bleed Maroon,” is also well-loved, and is a modern-day staple of any Texas A&M (Aggie) home football game.
Texas is a giant state, both geographically and in terms of its population – last estimated at 24,782,302 (US Census. 2009 Population Estimates, accessed September 3, 2010). It has given rise to some of country music’s best performers, and here I take a look at some of my current favourites.
Overall, Texas is a good place for country music. Take a listen to one of these artists and see what you think.
Granger Smith is a great country musician from Texas, who sings about the lifestyle and values he feels attached to as a Texan in many of his songs, (Granger Smith: About, accessed September 3, 2010).
Miranda Lambert is one of the biggest country music stars from Texas today. She became a country music sensation with the release of her 2005 Platinum-selling album Kerosene, and since then her fortunes have only gone up. (Miranda Lambert: Biography, accessed September 3, 2010). Miranda released her third studio album Revolution in September 2009, and enjoyed the first Number One hit of her career from that album, with the compelling and heartbreaking single “The House that Built Me.”
GeorgeStrait is good because he sings about simple things well. His first albums had a lot of gimmicky songs on them, and his more recent ones have one or two as well. But what people remember about George is his excellent voice, honest delivery, and ability to master a touching, classic country song like “Fool-Hearted Memory,” or the more recent “Troubador.”
What makes Miranda special is her honesty, and, quite frankly, her voice. Whether she is singing a lyric she wrote, or that of another writer, she brings the full force of dynamic expression to the project [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a kind of genuine connection to the material rarely seen since the days of Loretta Lynn and Patsy Cline.
