Colin Hay
In a music industry where manufactured pop reigns supreme, and record production moguls churn out hit after hit, it can be a tough life for any musician or band that's failed to capture the attention of these A&R gurus. However, being billed as 'the next big thing' isn't always everything it's cracked up to be, and sticking to artistic integrity is often more fulfilling, even if you probably won't quite make it into the mainstream.
Under his own initiative, and out of his own pocket, Greg Laswell released his 2003 debut album Good Movie to some acclaim, picking up the award for Best Local Recording in 2004's San Diego Music Awards. As a result, Laswell signed to Vanguard Records, and has since had his music featured in various TV shows and movies.

Refined and introspective, raw and intimate, you'd be hard-pressed to find an artist more deserving of success.
US actor Zach Braff is also an avid fan of his work - In addition to the appearance of "I Just Don't Think I'll Ever Get Over You" on the award-winning soundtrack of Braff's 2004 directorial debut Garden State, Colin's songs have also featured in various episodes of Scrubs, and he even made cameo appearances in episodes "Overkill" and "My Hard Labour".

Here's a list of five contemporary artists not quite getting the credit they class="dynamic">Martha Wainwright
Seemingly forever overshadowed by the mainstream success of her older brother Rufus, Martha Wainwright keeps in touch with her family's folk heritage; - her mother was renowned folk singer Kate McGarrigle, and her father legendary troubadour Loudon Wainwright III.
Formed in 2007, Bon Iver is the musical brainchild of Justin Vernon. Praised for its raw intimacy, critically-acclaimed debut album 'For Emma, Forever Ago', was famously recorded out of heartbreak over a three month period in a remote cabin in Wisconsin. Released independently in July 2007, the album featured on many end-of-year lists, and picked up various awards.'Blood Bank', a four-track EP followed For Emma in 2009.
Recommended tracks: "High and Low", "Sing, Theresa Says", "How the Day Sounds", "Comes and goes".
Her self-titled debut album was released in 2005 to positive reviews, showcasing her knack for songwriting and talent as a contemporary folk/rock artist, reminiscent of the timeless Suzanne Vega. This fantastic debut was succeeded by 2008's "I Know You're Married But I Have Feelings Too".

Being the ex-vocalist of highly successful 80s band Men At Work, one would think that Colin Hay would have no trouble capturing mainstream attention. Since the break up of Men At Work in 1985, Hay has released 10 studio albums [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], favouring lush acoustic instrumentation and introspective lyrics over the catchy pop jibes of his former band.
Recommended tracks: "Factory" [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Far Away", "So many Friends", "Jimi".
His 2007 follow-up, Through Toledo was penned during his divorce; the melancholy charm of ths album quickly cemented Laswell's reputation as an intelligent 21st-century songwriter. Opening track "Sing, Theresa Says" won song of the year in the San Diego Music Awards 2007. He has so far released four studio albums.
