The world is a much trendier place than it used to be a decade or two ago. Young people across the globe are expanding their knowledge about things that interest them and the world of fine dining and great wine has opened the doors to sophistication to many.
Wine is not only popular, it can also be an expensive habit. The price if wine is dependent on a lot of factors including location, weather and year [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the chateau and the market trends. Most of us are able to buy a great bottle of wine at quite affordable prices, but it takes the likes of billionaire Malcolm Forbes to spend more than $155,000 on a single bottle of wine.
In 1916, about 3000 bottles of the 1907 Heidsieck Monopole champagne was from France via Sweden, intended for the officers of the imperial army of Tsar Nicholas II, when the ship was sunk by a German U-boat off the coast of Finland. These crates of champagne were accompanied by 10,000 gallons of cognac and 7 barrels of burgundy.
Wine enthusiasts claim that this is one of the finest vintages of the 20th century, bagging a 100 out of 100 score by most. Jeroboam bears the rare label of the Mouton-Rothschild by Baron Phillipe de Rothschild. The 1945 vintage bottles bear a V mark for victory to indicate the end of World War II. A single bottle of this excellent vintage retails for about $114 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych],614. In 2006, an unknown buyer bought a magnum case of 6 bottles for $310,000 at an auction by Christie's.
The next in line amongst the most expensive wine ever sold is the 1784 vintage of the Chateau d'Yquem. Known to produce excellent wine for years, they were also said to be a favorite of Thomas Jefferson's. It is a premium Cru wine from Sauternes in southern Bordeaux. It has been given excellent reviews by many enthusiasts and bears a price tag of $56,588. In the wine classifications of 1855 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Chateau d'Yquem was the only sauternes to receive prestigious ratings explaining its superiority and high price.
1907 Heidsieck
It wasn't until 1997 that divers found the loot and is now sold at the Ritz-Carlton in Moscow as the most expensive wine in the world - a whooping $275,000 per bottle! Although the cognac and burgundy were ruined by the sea water, the champagne was preserved perfectly to be eventually enjoyed by the Russian elite or the wealthy guests of the Ritz-Carlton, Moscow.
Chateau Lafite has been producing excellent wines for centuries, and gained higher popularity when Thomas Jefferson, the then ambassador to France became a regular customer, praising their wine. A bottle of the 1787 vintage was found and sold at auction by Christie's London in 1985 for a staggering $160,000 by the Forbes Group.
1992 Screaming Eagle Cab
The bottle was thought to have belonged to Thomas Jefferson's personal collection due to the etching of the alphabets "Th J" on the bottle. The bottle was put on display under bright lights with the wrong angle and the wine soon turned to vinegar. In other words, this is perhaps the most expensive bottle of vinegar ever bought or sold! The bottle found it's way to millionaire Bill Koch who had the stories surrounding the history of the bottle investigated and was found to be refutable.
For those who can afford some of the expensive wines, here is a list of the costliest bottles of wine ever sold, and for those who cannot afford any of these, here is a chance to show off with your knowledge.
